When trying to examine a classic hardcore film, one must take several things into consideration:
1) The acting/plot might not be as good or coherent as one might like, and what is usually left is akin to grade B Hollywood fare.
2) There will probably be too much sex and it will take away from the story.
3) The production values won't always be top notch.
Well China Girl is one of those rare films that truly does work "both ways" so to speak. In one sense, it is a sex filled hardcore romp and on the other hand, a rather mild B-movie style spy yarn.
Featuring the beautiful Annette Haven in her first major starring role, China Girl revolves around a silly storyline of a secret government science project to create a drug which makes people have to tell everything they know about some prompted topic, sort of like truth serum, I guess. Sound confusing? To be honest, the exact purpose of this drug is never made clear so forgive me. Anyway, Annette of course is one of the scientists developing this drug and of course there is an evil James Bond style agency trying to steal the formula (which, like in all James Bond style films seems to be located on a huge estate, in the country it wishes to destroy and the government of this country is still powerless to destroy it ;). All is fine until the other scientists star getting kidnapped by this sinister organization, named Dragon.
Annette is soon given a hunky young protector but inevitably she too is kidnapped by Dragon and it is up to Mr. Stud to save the day.
B-movie antics aside, China Girl is an almost impossible to hate little cult gem waiting to happen. The dialogue is stilted, the action (meaning kicks, punches, etc. you perverts) is obviously faked, and the sex scenes go on f-o-r-e-v-e-r... The direction and production values are both good and as a whole China Girl is an amusing throw-away romp. This also marks the directorial debuts of husband/wife team Summer Brown and Edwin Brown, there's something for all you history buffs.

Of course TVX wouldn't bother to transfer this film from a print, so instead we get a bad DVD transfer of a 25 year old video with bad color and sound...SHAME, SHAME, SHAME!

WHO SHOULD SEE IT:
Hard to say for a movie like this...The plot/acting is of B-movie caliber, so fans of said genre maybe. The sex scenes are way too long, but will satisfy that crowd.
WHO SHOULD SKIP IT:
People who think stories are not needed in movies.
OVERALL:
TVX doesn't know how to release/remaster their films, but they release good ones. This should be seen/bought by classic fans only.

Let me first begin by saying that this film may not be for everyone. People expecting wall to wall sex will probably get bored with the film early on: The first sex scene doesn't happen until nearly thirty minutes into the movie, and the overall movie has about 4 sex scenes. But what scenes they are! And the plot is executed so well that it could stand by itself and still make for an entertaining movie.
The plot centers around an Asian crime syndicate known as Dragon, which is hired to steal the formula to a chemical substance that enables total memory recall. As the movie progresses, you learn that most of the scientists associated with the R&D of this compound have been abducted and interrogated by Dragon; unfortunately for the syndicate, they were all associated with coming up with uses for the substance and have no knowledge as to its structure.
Enter Drs. Olinski(played by a lucky bastard I've never seen before) and Hartgrave (played by the illustrious Annette Haven), the two principal researchers on this drug.
The US government, concerned by all the kidnappings, assigns two security agents to guard the good doctors. Nevertheless, Dragon manages to kidnap both: First Olinski, then Hartgrave.
The lady in charge of the local chapter of Dragon, a certain Madam Wu (Pamela Yen), believes that pleasure can be just as effective as pain in extracting information from people. The scene where this theory is first put to the test (on the male Dr. Olinski) is one of the hottest, most erotic scenes I have ever seen in an adult movie. Rather than try to paint a verbal picture that probably wouldn't do the scene justice, suffice it to say that it involves a drug that won't let you climax, a bed, and three women [four if you count the exotic dancer :) ]
Similar treatment awaits Dr. Hartgrave (Annette Haven), but with a decidedly lesbian twist. I'm not a fan of this type of sex, but I couldn't help but smile at the image of Ms. Haven surrounded by four nubile females. I suspect fans of this genre will find an erotic charge to be had here.
The other two scenes are between Annette Haven and her government "protector" (don't know his identity) and between Madam Wu and Haven. The former came across as "tender" somehow, although I don't think that was the intent; the latter came across as lesbian and that WAS the intent (but alas, not something I tend to enjoy).
Overall, I like this movie. A lot. There are no cum-oriented themes in this movie, so fans of raunch will probably find this film too tame. And people that hate plots in their adult films will also not like this movie and will spend most of their time holding the FF button down. But if you find that a good plot does indeed add a little something to an adult film, then I think you'll find that you can't go wrong with "China Girl".

Watched the TVX DVD yesterday. Transfer was ok (video source, parts of the source was jittery & it was a bit on the dark side, but pretty watchable). This one has more plot than sex & the film is quite amusing. Plot involves a Chinese group who is kidnapping scientists who are developing a drug that gives oneself "permanent memory". They torture the scientists by tying them up & getting them into a sexual frenzy before they break down. One of the scientists is played by Annette Haven. Government agents try to prevent this from happening & try to break the ring. The plot & dialogue are rather amusing, especially one line by Annette where she claims she can "drain a nut without breaking its shell". There are a couple of badly done karate fight scenes as well. Sex fans may be somewhat disappointed as there are only 5 sex scenes, 2 of which are rather brief. (The three that aren't are group sex scenes.) I do recommend the film for its pure cheesiness & camp value.

1. CIA agent David Chase (Douglas) seduces an American scientist Dr. Teresa Hardgrave (Annette) to extract information on a mind substance called ERA. After a long date and playing backgammon they make love in front of a fireplace.
2a. Dr. Olinsky (Frye) the other researcher involved in the project is kidnapped. He is interrogated Madame Wu (Ramola) style while Mr. Smythe (Ganapoler) also watches. After shooting him up with a drug, the Southeast Asian nurse (Susan) does a very good strip tease!

Starring: annette haven, pam yen, and others Annette Haven was hot at the time, but tame by today's standards.
The production values are very high. This was an expensive film for its day.
I'd give it a zero. The first sex scene occurs about halfway through the film. It is supposed to be a romantic fireplace coupling with Miss Haven, but is interupted by the bad guys. The remaining sex scenes are constantly intercut to the bad guys talking, and feature too many groaning head shots. It is an ambitious James Bond spoof, but a lousy sex film.
The best part was when it was over. Thank goodness for the fast forward button.
I felt that it was a waste of money, and the time it took to watch it.
This is a definate cat butt film.
