As head honcho of New Rochelle's International Film Industries, Leonard Kirtman worked his way up (some might say down...) from cheap horror flicks aimed at the drive-in circuit to sexploitation movies. Although he had been semi-anonymously churning out the latter for Distribpix since the late '60s, his "official" directorial debut, 1970's otherwise unremarkable CARNIVAL OF BLOOD, had starred pre-stardom Hollywood character actor Burt Young. Kirtman had also produced John G. Avildsen's first film, a naughty number entitled TURN ON TO LOVE. So it was not without glee that he took out a full page newspaper ad during the Cannes film festival to congratulate both real world celebrities on their box office success with ROCKY, simultaneously reminding them as well as their throngs of instant fans of their humble beginnings !
Funny thing is that, up until about 1977, Kirtman vehemently denied either he or his production company would ever touch anything that went beyond the socially acceptable R rating. Yet by the following year, he was already churning out explicit epics such as DEEP RUB and INSIDE DESIREE COUSTEAU, employing the alias "Leon Gucci", which probably sounded classy to him who was obviously not. An unsavory character even by sex industry standards, he would rapidly become one of its least liked professionals, especially by those who had the misfortune of working for him. He famously scared then fledgling Veronica Hart almost right back out of the business when he unceremoniously "stepped in" for her inconveniently flaccid co-star, the late "Zebedy Colt" a/k/a Edward Earle Marsh, on the set of TARA, one of a batch of four films he made with her and Seka in 1980. He was also responsible in part for superstar Seka's separation from husband Ken Yontz, at whose behest she had - reluctantly, one might imagine - agreed to cooperate with the middle-aged wannabe movie mogul, both on camera and in, shall we say, more private quarters.
Kirtman's rudimentary type of carnality, favoring lots of extreme close-ups, appeals mostly to the demographic that used to be semi-affectionately referred to as "raincoaters", the Dirty Mac brigade that always seemed to make up at least half the theatrical audience way back when porn was still a communal experience. His overall best work would probably be the star-studded FEMALE ATHLETES, with the lively summer camp set COED TEASERS as a solid runner-up, but bear in mind that there are quite a few ardent adult aficionados (my virtual buddy Casey Scott very much among them) who refuse to consider any of his movies worthy of vision, let alone comment.
Of the aforementioned "Seka Four", this is possibly the weakest but as good a place to start as any in assessing Kirtman's cookie cutter craftsmanship. As far as I'm concerned, PRINCESS and CONFESSIONS OF SEKA tie for top honors and TARA falls somewhere in between. A big name cast certainly juices up trite material about a frustrated married guy (Jerome Carter, who appeared fleetingly in Kemal Horulu's WOMAN IN LOVE) who wants to loosen up his prissy spouse (Seka ?!) with the assistance of his hot to trot mistress Veronica Hart, who predictably takes top acting honors even though she hasn't got much of a part to play. Since she's a film editor, hubby has one of his buddies, a porn producer portrayed by the late Bobby Astyr, drop off a few reels to get her in the mood. For the record, the clips shown are from Shaun Costello's scorching SHE'S NO ANGEL, including Beth Anna's expertly executed double penetration, courtesy of David Christopher and Leo Lovemore, aided and abetted by Sharon Mitchell.
No prizes for guessing that Carter's ploy works out just fine, save for a little snag at the closing orgy when Seka prefers Veronica's company to her husband's ! This carnal cluster counts most main characters among its participants, along with the immediately recognizable likes of Samantha Fox, Merle Michaels, Jamie Gillis, Ron Jeremy and Alan Adrian, plus bleached blond one shot Tracy and Bobby Brigante, who turned up in Kirtman's other Seka showcases as well. Prior to this action-packed fornication finale Hart, Fox and Gillis perform a threesome with all the dependable professionalism this lot can muster, which is plenty, and Astyr has a disappointingly lukewarm liaison with Serena who plays his bemused better half, sporting an unbecoming China girl wig.
