Right click a message and choose
Filters->New Watch Filter
The "Add New Filter" dialog will pop up and the filter expression will
have a default value. Click in this box and delete the default, then
paste in the filter above.
Choose Just the 1 newsgroup and make sure the option "Mark as read" is
selected. Press OK to save.
Now - back on the newsgroup right click and choose "Filters->Apply
Filters to Folder".
Click OK and the filter will run on only the current news group and
any message it finds, it will change the color to indicate that you
have 'read' the message.
This visually lets you see what messages the filter finds without
actually removing the messages as a test.
If you like the results, edit the filter and change the option to
"Delete" instead of "Mark as Read", then re-run the filter.
