The term "surrealism" is often bandied around quite recklessly to refer to just about anything with a Frank Zappa sense of "weirdness," and it's rare to find work in any medium where the term is truly appropriate. But Night on the Galactic Railroad is subtly but classically surreal in the way it resonates deeply with subconscious thought both conceptually and atmospherically, like the film equivalent of Giorgio De Chirico's paintings. This is the result of Gisaburo Sugii's brilliant directing, still the best of his career. Much of the film is devoted simply to building the atmosphere of ambiguous wonder/dread that permeates every moment and makes the film so inexplicably captivating despite its deliberate pacing. This atmosphere is supported by the eerie repetitive sound design of the train tracks and the surrounding universe, and the beautiful ambient music of Apryl Fool/Happy End/Yellow Magic Orchestra member Haruomi Hosono (an interesting bit of trivia: Hosono's grandfather was the only Japanese passenger on the Titanic, the sinking of which is a major aspect of this film). Gisaburo Sugii seems to have taken the approach of translating the ethereal feel of Kenji Miyazawa's writing into the medium of film, even though certain specifics of the story aren't quite faithful to the original. For example, the character of the blind wireless operater was not in Miyazawa's original story; that was the idea of screenwriter Minoru Betsuyaku (the important avant-garde theater playwright whose only other work in film was the screenplay for Yoshida's Coup d'Etat). Also, the fact that the main characters are anthropomorphic cats, whereas they were human in Miyazawa's story, stems from Hiroshi Masumura and his manga adaptation of Galactic Railroad to his own imagined world of anthropomorphic cats. Sugii takes advantage of this idea and gives the characters the same limited range of facial expression that a real cat has. Instead of relying on acting through character animation, the characters are led through much of the film with the same expression of dumbfounded confused curiosity that cats in real life often seem to have. The viewer is rarely afforded insight into their true thoughts, as their reactions to the experiences they encounter seem to be motivated by their subconscious. This unconventional approach to acting suits the film perfectly, and it also results in some innovative ways of revealing emotion. In one memorable scene, the main character's eyes tear up after he's teased by a classmate. The viewer knows this not because there's a shot of the tears in his eyes, but because the camera cuts to a first person shot from his perspective, which slowly pans up to the night sky where the lights become doubled and blurred. Masaaki Yuasa was most likely quoting this film when he included a nearly identical scene in Mind Game. Hayao Miyazaki also cites Night on the Galactic Railroad as an influence and one of his favorites.
This custom DVD is an upgrade to the R1 Central Park Media DVD that's already on the tracker. That R1 CPM DVD used the same old analog source as the Japanese laserdisc. This R2J DVD uses a new progressive anamorphic transfer from 35 mm (see the comparison below), and a 5.1 sound mix. The English subs are based on the subs from the CPM DVD, with a few improvements. Those subs were basically dubtitles timed to the Japanese audio, although in this case the dub was an accurate translation of the original Japanese, the only difference being the addition of a few extraneous lines that weren't present in the Japanese. I removed these extra lines from the subs and improved the timing. The Spanish and Russian subs were simply found on the internet, and I can't vouch for their accuracy. I also added the English audio from the CPM DVD, which didn't need much adjusting to sync up. Thanks to naboth for sending me the English audio file.
