Here's a start.
MKV=Matroska - a container
Video formats supported - Virtually anything*
Audio formats supported - Virtually anything*
ex. - MKV holds H.264 without being H.264.
H.264 is a codec like Xvid, Cinepak, DivX, etc.. They turn out
low-fat, no-fat compression creating what's in the container.
(technically X264 isn't a codec AIUI)
The devil is in the details and enough for serious nose bleeds. As
always specific answers require specific questions
GOM and VLC both ID the codecs in use but VLC is more generic
and only gives the fourcc number. (avc1 = H.264/MPEG-4 AVC)
I'll never remember them all and look them up on a list.

If a guy just wanted to dig out the codec name for an nfo there are
programs that make that easy. Here's a couple and some more nfo.

I used GSpot for yrs unfortunately dev stopped in 2007 so it doesn't
read MKV but it's still good for older files.

It's a little like how you eat a whole cow...
One hamburger at a time. =)
You're doing the hard part. Without the videos none of this would be
worth talking about. Thanks.
