Torrent sites are NOT safe unless you have a VPN that won't give up
your details (if asked).
Usenet on the other hand isn't safe even with a VPN, IF you connect
through an ISP... then you are trackable... a VPN won't stop that
connection being traced back to the user.
I also used Napster, there wasn't much else around back then.
Best thing to do with Torrent sites (other than get a VPN) would be to
build up a healthy credit ratio on the 'low risk' downloads that you
get, and then when you download a high risk Torrent, just use the
credit built up to pay back the download straight afterwards, limiting
you connection time to high risk stuff.
But I would Never advise someone to Torrent, its a risk that has to be
decided by the person themselves.
I have been on MVGroup and IPTorrents for many years, no problems so
far.
I think that it has been said that they are especially risky in the US
OR/AND for people in the US to use. DMCA having more rights (in the
US) I think.
