 Just FYI, I've been a subscriber to alt.binaries.*
 since 1995 and started posting in early 1997.

 I maintained the alt.binaries.cracks CrackFAQ
 from late 1999 until 2002, when it was abandoned.

 I created and maintained the alt.binaries.warez.ibm-pc.0-day
 FAQ until abwi0@use.net stopped posting.
 SharkPost was coded specifically for the
 abwi0@use.net posts.

 So I know a thing or two about usenet
 binaries.  That doesn't make me anything
 more than someone with a lot of experience
 at this, so view my advice accordingly.

 Detailed instructions for downloading and
 posting can be found on many websites, find
 one that you agree with and point people to
 it.  There's no point in reinventing a usenet
 binaries FAQ or HOWTO.

 My recommendation for preparing a document for
 new users is to compile a short list of tools
 and suggestions for using them.  Keep it short.
 Using URLs makes sure the user has the current
 version and there are often tips/tricks/howtos
 at the site.

 My list is
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 Newsposter: SharkPost (either 20080711 or 20080724)
 http://www.exscientia.org/content/akula_tools.html
 Archiver:   WinRAR (latest non-beta with a license, not a patch)
 http://www.rarlab.com/
 CRCChecker: QuickPAR
 http://parchive.sourceforge.net/
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

 Those 3 tools handle most usenet binaries needs.

 For what it's worth, I use Forte Agent v2.0, which is not
 readily available.

 I scrub my posting headers with NewsProxy v1.2.5, also
 available at http://www.exscientia.org/

 The header controls are documented in the source code.
 Anyone who wants help with using them should ask in
 alt.usenet.offline-reader.forte-agent.modified

 For the rest of usenet, I recommend VLC Media Player
 from http://www.videolan.org/

 For joining "split" files, I use something that I
 downloaded years ago.  It's probably in these results
 http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&as_q=Join+Split+%22context+menu%22&as_epq=&as_oq=&as_eq=&num=100

 If anyone wants to discuss this further, please use
 alt.binaries.warez.ibm-pc.d
