sister froup for ABCP. Discussions such as this one were encouraged
in that froup. Like (all) the suggestions coming from those who knew that
one too was largely ignored.

This ABCP audience - plenty of lurkers about, be sure -
wants your jocks, socks and hairpiece(rug)...stick the guitar where
it fits best, applies !
In short, the audience flogs the willing, ignoring _any_ hints or tips
on joining in. As you will note, not even a slow handclap from BR on the
advice you did work at so as to enlighten the lady.
I note "Herb" is. also absent in dispatches, dude finally saw the light
I guess :-/

I can count on one hand those subscribers - in more than 5 years
of "5foot2", "Pixie" and myself posting tutorials - who got on board with
learning the ropes.. that hand being a few digits short !

ABCP binary was generated by 6 posters max. Of that six two had some
idea on posting. NONE had the picture yourself and I share,, and know
to be as efficient _and_ safe as it can be.
Like you I have posted Gigs of binary to groups over more than 20 years.
My postings likely made possible by listening to those you guided and
taking a few whacks to the head in hearing Vrod & A'advark chide my
errors. Excellent tutors, I remember most respectfully.
The folks who did care for group content were - and I dare say are today -
well outnumbered by the "I want it now, where is it" crowd we both know,
everywhere.
Back then the group was clogged with disconnected (to upload) bleats for
reposts, and whines from msOE (ab)users around posted format.
Largely the trash binary consisted of unworkable OBZ posts and the
obligatory (for some) zips within zips often zipped yet again to post!
Digitised designs are already compressed for transport, a wrapper to 'hide'
is all that is needed.
In short lots of traffic with little working content. Some saw that chaos
as their best option over a choice of what was the actual useful content -
being posted at low volumes - making the NG readable and coherent.
A set posted so all could retrieve it then, or in six months, meant nothing
to the majority. Unless there was a binary file attached MOST never saw the
post nf0 text or were even remotely interested in an archive description or
advice on how to unpack/install.
I will bet still today most ignore text only posts unless the text is a
followup to their personal request.

Few had a grip on English - see my opening comment as to BR's language
skills.
Add to that the very short wick our European subscribers own and
"foul-mouthed"(sic) becomes wholly subjective.
I make some allowance in knowing some genuine hopefuls may have not thought
to look closely at the butthurt types flaming posters and those so inclined
to bewilder some with nym hijacks.
All been done before in other places, sure, however ABCP could not sustain
such antics.

What is left are the hard-nosed who are just as likely to do some trolling

Very little SPAM gets to ABCP. There is a specific Usenet reason for that
anomaly, I wont go there in explaining it yet again.
In short, SPAMbots/webcrawlers cannot 'see' ABCP.

One Kanuck abuser comes to mind, his task made easy as few listened
to advice on how to hide..preferring to not do that work.

Like you I gave it near on 10 years of trying before recognising times had
changed. Then there was one of those surprises you mention so I shot the
whole show.
Now, some years later, and several relocations to find and build a new
property (farm/ranch in your lingo), Life has been busy with no window
opening to change my mind on this NG.
Like BR and many others I have Gigs of the embroid stuff, and,, like a very
few, actually learnt to CAD embroider with initial help from "Don" (RIP)
and quality control by "Pixie".

Literally thousands of hours spent by a few members just to hold back an
encroaching tide of apathetic belligerence.
I believe it is way too late today to attempt revival, the whole embroid
industry has changed significantly, and anyhow way too risky for
USA/GB/NZ/AUS based posters to post any sets of commercial value.
What could have saved ABCP was turning to sharing our own work.
However whilst sewers here are quick to edit an embroidery design the work
to build one is beyond most. To then give that work away to an audience
totally disconnected, hoping one day _your request_ be filled, is a concept
I doubt anyone reading this NG even entertains.
Like "Don", a poster/designer could die in the saddle never having seen
anyone else posting cottage work. And that is the quality of work I am
pointing to - not the point and click "draw/auto-fill" designs "Herb" and
some others attempted to post in filling requests.

It is impossible to force folks to post, anything,,, anything at all.

So that is a Not.
For mine embroidery design was a journey, a journey ended by injury.
Unlike "Don" I will not be dying with hands totally wrecked from a lifetime
of punching out designs, I will however be always glad of the experience,
content with the memory of those who formed my view(s), those who
patiently educated, and one whose focus I never fulfilled, regrettably.

pstd using my original nick/nym from 2004 - a delight for the tinfoil hat
crowd given the "P.BENGI/Gymmy Bob" efforts on screwing with his msOE
setup in trolling posters across many newsgroups, none of it original.
For those that forgot, or do not know, "tazoar" was intended as loose use
of spermatozoa - in hindsight I know penetration was a dream.
