The good news is that YES, it now works perfectly! (although not using
yEnc would be better).
The not-so-good news is that the image is photographic (millions of
colors) and not well defined. For example, the dark exterior fades away
to nothing in the lower left-hand area, as does the left edge of the
hat. These makes it almost impossible to achieve a good result with
automatic digitizing, unless a lot of work is put into editing and/or
redrawing the image itself.
Yes, it could be done manually, and maybe someone else would like to try
his or her hand at it, but it's beyond both my competence and my
willingness to spend that much effort on it.
