I am giving *you* an answer as I see
from your activity you are likely not
"one of the trolls".
As positive as your action is, it makes _no_
difference. A functional newsgroup *needs*
a solid block of well intended posters.
One or two are just not enough.
People get sick, go on leave, get tired
of posting or simply lose interest all together.
These are just a few of the many reasons posting
slows down in binary groups.
By far the single most prominent reason
throughout Usenet for a "slowdown" is the flooding
of what were "good groups" of "crap posts".
There are millions of bytes uploaded today all over
Usenet that will never be downloaded by anyone
as the posts are not retrievable, easily. No leeches
equals no requests. No (genuine) requests equals no
posting from genuine posters. Results are "lists of trash".
This 'phenomenon' is not however the prime reason
why ABCP has become what it is now in 2011.
For the few who do read (read being "read and think")
the following statement is maybe going to seem both
profound and speculative. Trust me, I have far more
experience than any person reading or posting to
ABCP - on the topic of Usenet anachronisms.
This as I have "been around" long before anyone
in ABCP today (or since 1997) even saw a whisper
of "embroidery files are on Usenet".
As a statement I say to you (the reader) you find
today the results of two actualities, historical
fact - if you like.
1. People have died (insert whatever cultural
descriptor suits your read here) and nobody has
replaced their activity. The reasons for why that
activity has not endured in perpetuity are many
so I leave that for the reader to speculate on.
2. ABCP members, by their very nature, are overly
gullible when compared to the wider forums around
Usenet. The reasons for why that is are twofold.
a.) The age factor - we are too trusting, us old farts,
and many of us wander around thinking "the world
that gives is rosy". Usenet isn't like that, at all.
Yes, files are "free" but it is inherent to Usenet
operation that folk *work* at whatever it is they
choose to do as participation. Sitting on your
hands accepting whatever it is that is written or
posted as files is not productive, at all.
Too many of us find the "work" technically laborious
and so choose to do nothing. I have read hundreds
of responses in ABCP that reflect the truth of
this.. for "old people".
b.) Way too many of us have seen ABCP as a kind
of virtual Thrift Shop. A place where you merely ask
and the server just dumps a pile of goods on your
table for you to sort through, selecting that which
suits, or you can change to suit, saying _nothing_
about that which you do not choose to accept as
suitable, Seen as "good manners " (as a generational
thing) this behavior opens the door for all kinds
of exploits actioned by those who would take
advantage of that weakness in a Usenet group.
A truly motivated troll drools continually on
discovering a bunch of gullible 'targets'.
ABCP has had many many 'trolls', one "hopeful"
enduring, but the list of others now no longer
interested is very extensive. *And* they include
design House aspirants who are either no longer
in business or happy enough now their work is
not being posted here to leave the group be.
A very warm (and kind) Canadian soul
- 5foot2(Digi) - once wrote (in ABCP) in response
to one of my 'lectures'
... "you can lead a horse to water but you can't
make it drink"... to which I came back with;
"ABCP is a bunch of camels, I will brick 'em".
It is an old Aussie joke I am not going to explain
now.
However, some will say my "bricking" was
"trolling", and I can see why it is they think so.
None-the-less they would be very very much in
error, thinking such a thing. Many drank after
a good bricking, with the old adage "spare the
rod and spoil the child" holding true.
That 'tactic' will not work anywhere else on
Usenet that I know of. Again, as said, ABCP
was (is?) unique.
That was years ago and in 2010 we saw fine
postings made with little "interruption/noise"..
aside from that minute of stupidity with
<sewhatever> wanting to conquer the world [laff].
Some (still) could not help themselves and
trolled away... the gullible (and occasionally the
wise) responding in kind.
In December 2010 I went on holidays. To read
the group weeks later and find the trolls posting
"Where the fuck are they" messages does
not surprise me. After all it is winter in the NH
and all are squirreled away in their snow bound
abodes, posting and sewing like mad things?
No.. not so. There were no Thanksgiving posts of any
note and very few Xmas themed posts, aside from
the mini flood I posted before leaving for holidays.
Happy New Year 2011 posts?? Where are they!!?

I say there will be few if any 2011 Easter posts
also. The water has either "dried up" or been
"pumped out". There is the answer to "where the
fuck are they". Genuine posters retreat when
trolled to post :-/
In 2010 we had maybe 2 USA posters,
2 Australian posters, 1 French posters and
maybe 2 Dutch posters.
Lets see what eventuates in 2011?
I can say very confidently the number of
Aussie posters is going to reduce. I will
update the FAQ and get it registered. I
will do the occasional digi project (working
on one as I write) but no way am I taking the
risk of posting for the benefit of a few lame
trolls. I suggest those innocents so motivated
to post to whatever 'request' think about what
they do in 2011 also.
The rest of activity?
For the 'newbies' (if any) the adoption of
Windows 7 and then Windows 8 is going to an
insurmountable hurdle for both the technically
challenged and the husband/wife dependant
among us at ABCP.. I can only suggest
those that have machines on Windows 98se
and XP make provision to maintain
that status quo. The future does not bode well
with anything else.
A note for my fan-boi - how could you read
thus far and NOT be lathering for attention,
dweeb <lmao>

in ABCP nor anywhere else. 2011 in ABCP
you are going to have to get very tuned in
to every post you see Subject for - read them all.
Cos each will under a different name/persona/origin.
