Not too surprising. As I implied earlier, Free-Standing embroidery
requires different stitching than just embroidering on fabric, and why
it's NOT just a simple digitization.
It's like ultra-miniature macrame.
I think your friend would be well surprised and satisfied if you used
my first suggestion - stitch out a REAL FSL doily and bowl, and
the backs looking like ... well, backs ... you could put stars on both
the inside AND outside.
