There are other not so obvious 'complaints' on embedded
binary in a text response. You are not alone.

Do not use newsleecher (any version) to attempt to *read* binary
groups.
Fine as newsleecher may be for downloading 'raw' binary files NL
is hopeless at two functions of Usenet:
1. Posting text responses to text posts.
2. Sorting the binary from text in a combined post.
The latter is not good Usenet practice anyway but this NG has been
"at it" for so long now -- with those that insist on using WWW (http)
Browsers to read and post text -- the purists among us have simply
given up trying to educate. That is, until peeps as yourself pop up
and say "Hey..! wtf is happening here..?"
