Hi Nick,
Doing it this way keeps the trolls and spammers at a distance from new
or 'secret' groups. This method works. Have you seen any troll
activity in this group? I haven't, aside from a cop in Arizona, but
then I suppose he and the other trolls are in my killfilter and I
wouldn't notice. But I haven't seen anyone else replying to trolls. I
don't see any spam in this group either. Spammers are creatures of
habit, why else would they continue to litter long dead groups? They
are not interested in the society and goings on in here, they are
advertising.
I delete the e-mails I get after I answer them, otherwise my inbox
would have been blocked a long time ago.
Here is the MAIN reason:
If I openly posted the list of every active group the posters would
ALL hate me and stop posting. Remember, it's THEIR butts on the line.
Making us hard to find is the point. No, I think others would tell
you that your solution is NOT a good idea.
E-mailing a text list of usenet groups is not illegal. Your usenet
provider does it every time you refresh your group list. I am simply
providing a service to folks who are curious, but may not have the
expertise to protect themselves. I have spent nearly ten years in
these groups building a reputation as someone who cares and is
(fairly) reasonable. You don't have to trust me, and my feelings
aren't hurt.
The reason I suggested using hushmail is because the message is
encrypted on both ends and anyone trying to intercept the messages
would have to have my encryption key and that of the initiating
mailer. Once again, sending a note that says, 'Hi Doc, may I have your
list please?' isn't illegal and would not raise an eyebrow anymore
than asking me for Chocolate Cake recipes.
