Tony.Robinsons.Crime.And.Punishment.Part1.nfo
In this four-part series, Tony Robinson goes on a fascinating and sometimes bizarre journey to discover where English laws came from, who made them and why. From trials of boiling water, through the decapitation of a king, to the emergence of modern democracy, it's a journey that starts 2,000 years ago and remains unfinished today.

Throughout his historical journey, Tony plays the part of the accused, judge, jury and executioner and discovers the often strange circumstances from which the main tenets of modern English law emerged.

Pt1, Feud Glorious Feud

Tony journeys back to the Dark Ages, before laws were written down and trials involved harsh physical ordeals. But by the end of this period, the Saxons had created the very first sophisticated legal systems of courts and juries some 200 years before they were formally introduced.

Pt2, Guilty As Charred

Tony looks at the period up to and after the Norman invasion, which was perhaps the most turbulent in the history of law. But in the 150 years from 1066, the legal system was transformed. This period saw the signing of the Magna Carta and the establishment of the three major principles of a modern legal system: independent judges, trial by jury, and English common law. Tony demonstrates trial by flesh burning, visits a town where Norman ideas have inspired punishments for modern day Anti-Social Behaviour Order offenders and discovers how a muddy field in Surrey changed the course of international legal history.

Pt3, New King On The Block

Tony's journey has reached the 16th century and in this episode he looks at the battle over FREEDOM OF SPEECH led by Thomas Moore, and how the monarchy finally lost its power - and its head, to prove that no-one was above the law. We learn why judges wear wigs, why a tyrant ripped up the legal rule book, and about the introduction of independent judges. Tony looks at the reign of Henry VIII whose marital problems cast Britain adrift from Europe, and changed the course of legal history with the establishment of the Church of England and the introduction of the Act of Supremacy. As crucial as the Magna Carta, the introduction of the Bill of Rights in 1688 saw Parliament and politicians now assume complete domination over the monarchy for good.

Pt4, Have I Got Noose For You

In this final episode, Tony examines the huge escalation in the amount of law making with the rise of industrialised society in the 18th century. And with thinkers such as Voltaire, Locke and especially Jeremy Bentham - the man who called for a proper democracy - the modern ideas of prison reform and rehabilitation for offenders begin to emerge. Tony relives the theatre of public executions, explains how shocking factory conditions brought the UK to the brink of anarchy until the law stepped in, and how men and women finally won the right to vote. And he tells us about the introduction of the Metropolitan Police Act in 1829 which established London's police force - the world's first professional police force.
