Being over 50 just means a person can't hear frequencies above 15 kHz
anymore, but they certainly can hear the difference in dynamic range,
noise level, and distortion.
As for Apple products not accepting FLAC files (or WAV or any other
common lossless file), convert it to one of Apple's lossless formats,
AIFF or Apple Lossless. There are plenty of free tools around to do
that. Plus if you have the lossless file, FLAC usually, you can
convert it yourself to any lossy format such as AAC or MP3 and still
have the lossless file for the future. (Aside, AAC sounds better than
MP3 if you want a lossy format for an Apple product, and another
reason to get the FLAC and avoid the MP3.)
