Whoever is not aware of this HBO treasure, which was tragically cut
short after the 2nd season due to financial and political reasons,
should definitely become aware of it.  It is arguably the most
intriguing, captivating, beautifully acted, and engrossing TV show ever
put to film.

Carnivale is introduced perfectly by the opening monologue: "Before the
beginning, after the great war between Heaven and Hell, God created the
Earth and gave dominion over it to the crafty ape he called man.  And
to each generation was born a creature of light, and a creature of
darkness.  And great armies clashed by night in the ancient war between
good and evil.  There was magic then...nobility...and unimaginable
cruelty.  And so it was.  Until the day that a false sun exploded over
Trinity, and man forever traded away wonder for reason."  From that
point forward, I had to know what it all meant.  I was hooked.

The show is an odyssey of Ben Krohn Hawkins and Brother Justin Crowe,
the creatures of light and darkness respectively (Avatars) of their
generation.  The setting is in a travelling carnival full of VERY
colorful characters roaming the dust bowl of 1934, led by the
mysterious and unseen figurehead known only as Management, which picks
up Ben just as he loses everything he's ever known...and in Mintern
California where Brother Justin holds court over his church and
congregation.  As they catch glimpses of each other in their tortured
dreams, they begin to discover their own true supernatural natures.
One embraces his Avataric calling while the other tries to run away
from it.

Carnivale takes its time spinning its magical yarns, which was
undoubtedly the biggest complaint of the fast food TV crowd which is
used to getting full character development, plot development and
resolution in one 50-minute episode.  Carnivale makes you sweat for
these little nuggets of information...and when they finally start
falling into place, seeing this amazing jigsaw puzzle take shape is
like getting a reward.  You need to have the patience to be told a
story, and to dismiss the modern urge to know everything immediately so
that you can quickly move on.  Carnivale poses a lot of mysteries and
mysteries take time to unfold.  It's sad that so many people have lost
interest in being told a story that moves at a natural pace...but
that's what a steady diet of reality TV and Desperate Housewives can do
to a mentality.  This show makes you think and wonder.

I haven't met a single person yet who wasn't hopelessly pulled in by
the 3rd or 4th episode.  After that, each episode was like an occasion
for them.  So, since HBO has done a nearly non-existent job of
promoting Carnivale, I'm taking it to the people.  Give yourself a big
treat and take a peek at Carnivale.  You can thank me later. :)
