A few years ago, TV Guide ran an article on occurrences which did and
did not happen on the Tonight Show. There were several myths so
pervasive that people swore they had seen them, when they actually
never took place on any show. Well, I swear I saw this on a talk show,
most likely dates being 1969-1972, I just can't swear it was the
Tonight Show.
The incident, exactly as I recall it: a politician is introduced, I
believe a current or former state senator. Little fat balding man with
glasses storms onto the set. Before the host barely has time to say
hello, the man bursts out, actually screaming, several repetitions or
variations of, "I'm a Georgian! You insulted me! You don't insult a
Georgian!" and storms off. The host sits there dumbfounded, the
sidekick and everyone else have their mouths hanging open.
Does anyone remember this? On which show did it occur and who was
involved? No explanation was ever given, the incident just ran as is.
At the time I wondered what the fellow's problem was and what was wrong
with the people of the state of Georgia to elect such a raving nutcase
to an important public office such as the senate (or congress, or
governor, whatever he was.) Was no one better available? Was he all
right before and just blew up suddenly?
>From time to time I still wonder, what was this guy on? Bipolar,
drunk, or something else? What set him off? What became of him later?
