No offense intended but you are sounding like a hysterical woman.
First of all, do you really think that that there is a problem if you are
the ONLY one complaining?
Your ISP, (SBC) is not blocking you. I mean, after all the usenet is useful
for many things and not just what you use it for. If your ISP was blocking
access to the ports normally used for all of the usenet, then they would be
extraordinarily stupid to do so. That is not to say your ISP (SBC) is
harmless. You really should use an encrypted tunnel through your ISP so that
they if they were to concern themselves with what you are doing, then all
they can tell is that there is a bunch of unknown encrypted bytes of data
passing through their server on the way to or the way from, you. The reason
your ISP is not harmless is because when the Motion Picture and Recording
Industry henchmen go after those for copyright infringement, they simply
have the ISP conform to a supeana where they may analyize your up/downloads
to determine if you are infringing. Of course, other agencies use the same
methods. Take your ISP out of the loop and tunnel through them for your own
peace of mind (and I am sure your ISP doesn't mind being taken off the hook
either).
So, who then may be the culprit causing your problems since the usenet has
not come to an end? If you guessed meganetnews, ding ding you win! You are
to be congratulated on your clarity of thought. It is indicative that you
may well have calmed down.
My guess is that meganetnews has had a completion/retention problem lately
and rather than have the statistics make them look bad, (like only 80%
completion of binaries and a sucky 4 day retention I heard) they do what
they have to do to make it look like they are fixing things. They probably
first filter out binary posts to NON BINARY groups (groups with out the word
"binary" in their heirarchy). That will free up some space and allow an
increase in their retention rate.
If you want to rid yourself of the problem with SBC, the feds, and the end
of the usenet, I suggest getting another news server. So you don't jump from
the frying pan into the fire, if I were you I would go with Easy News. Hell,
20 gigs of download a month for 10 bux. You can't beat that. Even more
attractive is completion rates about as near perfect as you can get and
probably over a month of binary retention in ALL groups, and not just the
"binaries" heirarchy. If you do not take matters into your own hands and
improve your situation yourself (by changing news servers) then I suspect
the usenet really will come to an end for you.
Oh yeah, don't forget the tunnel. What tunnel? WTF am I talking about? Just
do a Google search using these terms. SSL tunnel.
