In the past, I have used an unregistered version of hypercam:

I would name the stills sequentially by timestamp (when I would collect my
own cam captures) and then play them in a slideshow. I would then set
hypercam to record, say, one frame per second, and play back 2 frames or 3
frames per second. This would increase the speed of the slideshow and turn
it essentially into an avi. Also, I would set the frame compression quality
to 100%.
The problem with hypercam is that the files you create are very very large
(especially with 100% quality and playing back more than 1 frame per
second). Sometimes I would have files that were 5 or 10 minutes in length
and 300-400 MB -- without sound. In those cases where you wind up with a
very large file that might not be worth the bandwidth it would take to post
or share, I would run the avi through MS Moviemaker and convert it to wmv.
This is probably not a very efficient way of making avis from cam captures,
but I have made several that way, and have even posted a few in different
ng. But this is an easy and free way (unless you want to pay to register
hypercam -- or better yet, find a crack for it).
