Jack, it isn't the media player, it's the codec. The Intel Indeo 5
(IV50) codec that plays the old ZZ vids is ancient (by modern
standards). It's inherent in Windoze 98 for the PC and OS 9 for the
Mac. Support for it was dropped in OS X, and also IIRC in Windoze
XPoop.
The codec can still be imported back into XP, but Intel elected not to
upgrade it to support OS X. As I understand it, the *only* way you can
play these old vids on a current Mac is to boot into "classic mode,"
which apparently emulates OS 9. Don't quote me on this. I'm not a Mac
expert, don't own one, don't want one, and I'm just pulling stuff that
I've read out of my memory banks.
As far as media players for the PC, IMHO there's only one. It's
MediaPlayer Classic, the result of an ongoing open-source global
project whose goal has been to take what Micro$haft started, decompile
it, and make it into what it should've been. Instead of the bug-laden
spyware abomination M$ has turned it into.

Following its evolution over the past couple of years, it's become,
absolutely, the *only* media player I use. Literally... for everything
from mp3s to RealMedia to Quicktime, FlashVideos, and all the way from
there through mpegs and avi's to DVDs.
But then... I like simplicity. One perfect lightweight proggy that
does it all. Some others still seem to prefer the bloat and the bugs
and the crashes, and... oh nevermind... given another minute I'll be
climbing up on the soapbox and going into an hour-long rant.
I'll quit while I'm ahead... ;oP
