If you think the hard drive problem is a physical problem, it's best
not to touch it. Turn it off, leave it off, and call a good data
recovery company, for instance ESS Data Recovery at 1-800-237-4200.
Plug: they have over a 90% recovery rate and provide free evaluations
of any type of drive, complete with a not-to-exceed price quote.
Now that the plugging's out of the way, it's possible to recover the
data yourself by using various recovery utilities, but BE SURE that
your drive has only a logical and not a physical problem. A good rule
of thumb: If it's making noise, send it in.
Also, a common mistake people make is that they don't check the drive
on multiple computers. Plug it in to another computer to make sure
it's the drive.
After you try these options, if there's still no data, THEN try calling
ESS. With any luck you can do a little research and save yourself some
money with a self-recovery...just don't push it.
