I too had a problem in the past with an external. I would like to reinforce
the advice Softee gave about the USB interface. I had a USB2 that I
connected a cheapo hub to because I was running out of ports. This cheapo
hub went bad but the only info I could get from my machine was that there
was a communication problem between my computer and the external. Since I
was sure it wasn't a mechanical problem (no noise or excessive heat) I also
thought it was a tail end problem in the external. It was only at some later
time when I removed the drive from the external case and slaved it up to my
internal hard drive that I realize the problem was my USB2 cheapo hub.
I did invest in a software data recovery tool though. It was Runtime. I
think a google search would find it. I never did get to use it though.
All may not be lost.
