190515A
------------

The worst type of loneliness
is the type that you try to hide
when you with other people.

The worst type of loneliness
makes you leave the room,
wanting to erase the whole scene.

The worst type of loneliness
transforms the spent years
into feeling as brief as minutes.

The worst type of loneliness
makes the day seem stretched out
as if it might take forever to end.

Another intrusion
that feels about the same
as a splinter
that has gotten under the skin.

You pull yourself out
the way a knife is pulled out
from a new wound,
leaving another opening.

It is too offensive
to say that it is all gone wrong:
nothing going together,
among the stray pieces.

The leftover bits
lack any of the right tastes.
You suspect they are tainted,
and try to remain polite.

Continually making escape plans,
that all fail in their execution,
is the routine condition
of any prisoner.

This year
the  weather is hot and cold,
about everything,
but the flowers arrived late,
and they are exceptionally beautiful,
having kept us all waiting,
a little bit longer.

I captured some of them,
in the way that souls are captured
inside a camera.
Sometimes I dare to imagine
that you might see them,
without my really believing anything
about anything that I imagine.

If I am in any way fortunate
strangers, whom I never knew,
might one day see them,
and one or two of those strangers
might chance to imagine
something about me,
that I could imagine their imagining.

Sometimes I imagine
that the flowers are dreaming
their own secret dream lives,
where they seduce one another
in similar ways to what I can imagine
that you would have seduced me
in some similarly shared dream.

------------

The desire to preserve something,
so that there is something left,
stretching it into smaller and smaller
increments of tease,
before it becomes emptiness.

So much has continually been lost,
one becomes more and more afraid
of anything that one happens to love.
Particularly if it might wear away,
or become consumed in the process.

It becomes more and more difficult
to prevent anything from being spoiled,
by the persistent desire
to meticulously avoid destroying it
by any acts of veneration.

It is that type of reverence
that interjects its melancholic note,
into the midst of the song.
A persistent chorus of reminders
as to each new type of tragedy.

More often there is the simple fact
that whatever we want the most
we most easily find a way to lose.
It is the cruelty of playing at chance,
in pretense of freedom to choose.

It is always the differences
that lead us to the most contention,
as if we are obliged to deny
any such obvious facts.

Perhaps the reason why I don't know,
anything I wanted to know of you.
Too many battles fought and lost
as to obvious differences.

Settle for something else,
but nothing really strikes my fancy,
because it seems all too much the same
and that emphasizes the differences.

My bad luck,
but such things happen by design,
as another type of torment,
substituting various deprivations.

Everything is continually built up,
only to be toppled down again:
proving that a childhood truth
never really changes.

Various arguments, manifestos,
and convincing gestures,
would never suffice in any way
to make any real difference.

I know it would have freed me,
to know you near to me,
instead of filling the time
with other equally trivial pastimes.

It is only the differences,
as to how what is wasted is wasted,
in to the larger scheme of whatever is
toppled down and built up.

Most everyone I have ever met
is absorbed in a process
of killing themselves slowly.

I tend to wonder if it is my cowardice
that has prevented my choosing
one or another of their precise methods.

Not that I have found anything
that offers a  means of escape
from the specter of my own mortality.

They seem to all be more approved of,
in each of their various instances,
of faith in their own persistent dissolution.

I wonder if that is how such things started
in some forgotten cave,
where beginnings and endings became rituals.

It makes clear the common longings
for various conditions of annihilation,
as to where the river always goes.

Everything being carried along,
in its struggle for some small illusion
as to some type of seeming immortality.

It is in watching what the water does
where it wears away the edges,
changing the shape of anything.

Eventually the earth and stone inside us
becomes the water,
leaving a trace of sediment.

There is that desire
to leave a footprint,
or to write one's name in the mud.
