MOSCOW - A nuclear submarine caught fire in a shipyard in Russia
on Tuesday, officials told NBC News.The Oscar II-class submarine,

welding work in the shipyard in the city of Severodvinsk, Russia'
s state-run United Shipbuilding Corporation confirmed.
USC, which owns the Zvyozdochka shipyard in the northern
province of Arkhangelsk, told NBC News that no one was injured
and that the vessel's nuclear reactor had been shut down
beforehand.

Two new submarines will be laid down to celebrate Russian
Submariners' Day on March 19, the Arkhangelsk, a 120-meter Yasen-
class nuclear submarine and Velikiye Luki, a 72-meter Lada-class
diesel-electric submarine as part of the rearmament program
which will complete in 2020.
The new Velikiye Luki submarine will be built according to a new,
modernized project, and will have "improved stealth parameters
and extended autonomous operation," according to Navy Commander
Viktor Chirkov. This most likely means a new engine which does

The Orel submarine which is capable of carrying nuclear-tipped
cruise and anti-submarine missiles caught fire while under
repair in a dry dock.
"The rubber insulation between the submarine's light and
pressure hull is on fire," Tass reported.
The blaze broke out while the ship was under repair in the
Zvezdochka shipyard in Severodvinsk, about 1,000 kilometres (620
miles) north of Moscow on the White Sea. After attempting to put
out the flames for several hours, officials finally let water
into the dry dock to extinguish the fire completely.
However, a spokesman for the shipyard told Interfax news agency
that it could take another two hours to stop the burning.
