231114A
------------

The run on sentence
that ends
in sudden death.
The axe always falling
when you least expect it
to come down.

It is bad enough
to suffer thwarted dreams,
and worse yet
to suffer thwarted nightmares,
always stopped short
of any sort of satisfaction.

You are never properly notified
of your own cancellation.
Another form of machine processing,
running completely on automatic.
The feeling of your luncheon meat
suddenly being canned.

If you cannot choose your own pleasures,
then you try very hard
to choose your own sufferings,
hoping there is some kindness
to be found among the remnants
of what might chance to come together.

What comes up short
is never worth saving.
Only a stick in the mud
knows where the bottom is.
That sinking feeling
of being always headed down.

It is not as if you reached too far
and fell through for it.
It was more about being tied up,
and not being able to get free.
Enduring a sort of examination
where you can never answer right.

Made to feel cold as bones,
even before the blood runs out.
Finger tips feel as if they are ice,
freezing to nearly anything.
Everything drained from the trunk
right at the tip of the root.

The spine starts to fold,
resembling a deck of cards.
Something shuffled and dealt,
starting at the top,
and going down to the base,
where you find the queen of hearts.

No one was willing to place a wager,
so they left you staring into space.
That blank screen of death,
that divides your zero into overflow.
Worrying about someone
unplugging your life support.

A beautiful nurse comes in
to see how you are pinned.
You have no moves left on your board,
and she controls all the playing pieces.
She examines your losses
and counts her gains.

Trying to patch together
anything that is not
totally beyond repair.

The perpetual motions
of mending broken parts
that won't stay fastened.

Everything was propped up,
to try to keep it going,
until it crashed.

Waking up in the morning,
bent into mysterious shapes,
not knowing their meanings.

Struggling to iron it out,
to hide the wrinkles and creases
that might betray what was meant.

Legs in the wind,
dangling
as would the broken stems
of wilted flowers.

The wheels keep turning,
stretching the torso
until it is racked
into endless confessions.

The arms engaged
in a sign language
that no one understands,
but everyone listens to.

Various loose pieces
clamped together securely,
so that nothing ever breaks away
or becomes lost again.

Everything becomes brittle,
in that sort of cruel atmosphere.
It starts to break down,
the way rubber bands deteriorate
and eventually snap,
crumbling into useless bits.

It is all about various connections,
formed of ligaments and tendons,
cemented by words and gestures,
always stretching and contracting
along various portions of the frame,
until something gives.

The wings always break off first,
being difficult to reattach and splint.
Then the head is damaged,
usually coming loose from the neck.
You can sometimes pin it,
back into its proper place.

It is the sort of thing that always happens
when things struggle to go up,
that are not supposed to try to rise.
It all depends on how hard they fall,
and what they hit on the way down,
before the darkness swallows them.
