The False Dialectic: Materialism Versus Anti-Materialism as a Values Conflict http://groups.google.com
Robert Morpheal (morpheal@yahoo.com) 2009/09/02 15:58

The debate between materialists and non materialists (anti-
materialists) is the same old false dialectic prevailing in the past
century. The way out of that conflict is to produce goods of real
value, well crafted things made to last and meant to remain useful,
adding to their enjoyment, adding to quality of life and facilitating
more meaningful cultural involvements. That would constitute a truly
radical materialism, and it would also be the death knell to the
existing mass "junk culture" of anti-materialism. What radical
materialism needs is a Renaissance of craftsmanship, that seeks to
pursue competitive excellence in craftsmanship as one of its guiding
values. We must keep in mind that this shift in paradigms towards a
new and truly radical materialism is also the answer to many of our
most pressing environmental issues. It is the answer to massive
quantities of garbage, of scrap, created when poorly made, planned to
be obsolescent, things are routinely tossed out. Those things can
never be truly valued, because they were poorly made, and for most
part they are ugly, and entice their own discard as trash. They have
no truly aesthetic appeal, no qualities of craft or art that commend
them to be taken better care of and passed on to future generations,
and only modest utility. Often they are built to deteriorate, rather
than being built to be preserved and utilized for more than a fraction
of a generation. This is what must change if the environment and
values are both to be saved. We need a radical materialism, not anti-
materialism.
