>From first hand experience, I know that excessive gambling can cause a
great deal of stress within one's family. I was not the gambler
(though I do buy my lottery tickets on a regular basis). In fact I
spend more than I really should but keep the bills and the house in
good status. I just sometimes wish I would have spent less and that
would have allowed me an extra small vacation each year.
When I refer to excessive gambling, I am talking about using credit
cards to get the cash to gamble, not paying bills when they are do and
even get loans to give yourself more of a cash flow to squander at
video lottery terminals (VLT'S) or casinos. Sometimes you hear of
someone taking a sledge-hammer to a VTL machine because of all the
money they lost in it. Good for them (not for losing all their money
but for destroying one of those machines). In my family, there was one
individual who was an excessive gambler. So much so in fact, that it
was just a matter of time before he lost everything. And along with
the gambling goes lies - lies to cover up where one is going and what
has happened to one's money. If the gambling is admitted, the loses
suffered are always understated so that those around him don't
chastise him too severely.
Gambling will always be with us - it's part of human nature. But like
anything else, do it in moderation. Excessive gambling is a disease
which will kill you financially, destroy family trust and in some
cases, will in fact cause suicide.
If you think you're :out of control:, get help before you destroy your
family or destroy yourself.
