Study spots acne DNA - The Times, July 30 2004

I have some problems in believing the theory proposed in the above =
article.=20
At the start of his article, the clinical biochemist Terence Kealey =
posits Charles Darwin's theory that human beings lost their hair in =
order to decorate our bodies with tattoos, piercings and the like. I =
disagree with this idea because it seems too complicated for a =
straightforward process of sexual signalling. Evolution works by using =
the simplest method to achieve its goal. Given that we evolved bigger =
more intelligent, stimulous-seeking brains than other apes and, as a =
result, demand a more exiting sexual experience than simple penetration, =
it's far simpler to just make the human body more attractive to look at =
and feel to satisfy the high requirements of a human sexual relationship =
needing complex verbal, visual and physical communication, instigating =
touching foreplay, to keep a couple together to mate. Rather than going =
through all the rigmarole of creating an instinct to decorate, it's far =
simpler to attract mates to one another by using what you've already got =
- skin. Which is why we find it so lovely to look at and caress. It's =
more likely that decoration followed as a runaway process of our brains =
evolving to create symbolic art for comunication. This would back up the =
use of skin to attract mate by drawing attention to it.
The implication of the question, "why did it evolve?" in reference to =
the Propionibacterium acnes bacterium is all wrong. We don't have =
bacteria because we wanted it but simply because it jumped the species =
barrier to settle in our juicy, fatty skin. It wanted us whether we =
liked it or not.
Kealey says that we evolved acne as a way of dropping lower-status beta =
teenage boys down the social ladder in order to escape the fighting of =
alpha status men. They would be seen as ugly by the alphas and therefore =
not a threat. This way they would survive, unlike their dead or maimed =
alpha peers, and breed the with the females.=20
But their are problems with this scenario. First of all, who wants to =
mate with an acne-ridden teenager? Evolution created beauty to indicate =
the health and fitness of mates to show that they are relatively free of =
disease. This turns evolution on its head to say that having a disease =
helps to aid your survival. British readers will remember the taunts =
that EastEnders soap star Dean Gaffney suffered when he had acne - =
"pizzaface" etc. I don't think that helped him in the sexual stakes. =
Anybody fancy someone with measles or chickenpox? I'm sorry but we =
humans of both sexes like clean, smooth, unblemished skin, not =
unhealthy, spotty skin. And what about girls? The many brands of =
anti-spot cream wouln't be selling so much if girls weren't using them. =
As girls don't tend to fight for status, and boys certainly don't like =
spotty girls, where do they fit in his theory? The fact is that =
Propionibacterium acnes affects 80 per cent of all adolecents, not just =
teenage boys. Acne may only appear in teenage years because of hormonal =
factors, not because of a sexual advantage. Also, boys are no physical =
match for older men in fighting terms, so why try to rule yourself out =
as a threat if you're a teenage boy? Acne also only affects teenage boys =
not adult men, who would gain more from having acne to avoid fighting. =
On top of that, girls tend to prefer older men with status and wealth as =
partners, and most children are born in monagamous relationships between =
adult partners, not promiscuously between women and teenage boys. Humans =
are not the same as other apes in this regard.
Kealey then mentions the mangabeys of sub-Saharan Africa, who remain as =
adolescents all their lives. He states that the beta males slip in the =
company of females, wooing them with humourous courtship and gentle =
love-making, while the alpha males are out hunting and killing. This =
illustrates the point, though, that it is the positive alternative =
strategy of the charm offensive, as opposed to brute force of alpha =
males, that gets females willing to mate with the betas. The negative =
use of acne is unnecessary, and wouldn't work anyway - if they had acne =
like us humans - without beta apes being charming to their female =
companions. They'd be just ugly, pitted faces, without any redeeming =
features.
Rather than utilising acne, we evolved as human beings to be less =
violent than other apes, especially chimpanzees. We form loving =
monogamous relationships instead of the pure promiscuous orgy of other =
primates, bonobos not included, which leads to the violent competition =
among males to establish themselves as top dog to gain mates. Like the =
mangabeys, we are more childlike in our appearance and playful =
behaviour, using intelligent, creative conversation, decoration of our =
bodies and display, like dancing, to attract our mates. This is because =
fighting is costly - it's easier as a male to look sexy than go through =
all the trouble of fighting, which could kill you. Males, especially in =
Stone Age tribes, may still fight to compete for women. But men also use =
their charm offensive to have affairs on the side, as well as in =
marriage, as a little evolutionary insurance. Women like these more =
sensitive, childlike men. Just look at the babyfaced, teenage, or =
teenage-like, entertainment idols, like Leonardo DiCaprio or Jamie =
Cullum. Using our wit and intelligence to work together as a species in =
tribes to raise our children, also, is more advantageous as it takes =
more than a couple to raise children, and children need adults outside =
the family to inculcate them with the values of their society to bring =
them up as citizens.
