I don't know how far or wide you guys travel on Usenet, but I follow a
lot of different groups -- mainly MP3 & Audiobook groups, but some
others as well. And I'm seeing a lot of complaints about poor
propagation from various services -- and seeing some of the same with
astraweb. At the same time, I'm seeing massive attacks on active
newsgroups -- people are posting tons of malware posts at an
incredible level and across an incredibly wide scope of groups. I'm
sure some of you may have seen these rather clumsy attacks which
generally consist of a number of .exe files or archive files claiming
to be either warez or porn -- but, like a thousand file all the same
incredibly small size! Let's face it, it's going to take more than 114
lines to hold Adobe Photo Shop!
I have my own ideas about who's behind it (recording industry) and why
(try to kill pirates so that they can continue to screw the public and
the artists/movies and kill Usenet because of piracy), but the point
is that these attacks are causing propagation problems. If you're
posting anything, you should keep this in mind and plan to use par
recovery files and plenty of them, or prepare to do reposts. The
problems are sporadic and do not seem to hit all services the same
way. I saw someone complain about one service where astra was fine,
and then I see some people thanking people for files that did not make
it through completely on astra.
Incidentally -- I just read an article that stated DOS attacks on
servers are increasing horribly as well. Watch that your own computer
doesn't become a slave-bot sending these attacks! One report stated
that some recent attacks have consumed as much as 40GBS bandwidth!
