I started thinking about a book I read when I was 10 years old. It
was called "The Wild Country" and the cover had a picture from the
Disney movie of the same name. I googled it and discovered 3
surprising things: One, the movie was a typical Disney butcher job - the
real name of the book was "Little Britches: Father and I were Ranchers".
Two, "Little Britches" was a true story. Three, it was only the first book in
a series of 8 books that covered the events in author Ralph Moody's life
from the age of 8 until his early 20's. I looked on Ebay and found the boxed
set of all 8 books and bought them.
When Ralph was 8 his family moved from New England to Denver because
his father had tuberculosis. Soon after arriving, Ralph is walking down the
street when a group of cowboys ride up on horses. The leader's name is Hi
and he offers the boy a ride. Ralph accepts (remember the good old days
when you could offer a strange 8 year old a ride and he'd jump right up on
your, um......, horse?) and they take him home.
It turns out that Hi is the foreman on a large nearby ranch. He gets Ralph
a summer job there. He sets up a cot next to his own for the boy, but the owner
of the ranch vetos this and insists that Ralph sleep in the house with the owner's
family. Hi arranges for the boy to get a couple of free hours every
afternoon. They spend the time together and Hi teaches Ralph trick riding on their
horses. They end up winning a trick riding contest at a rodeo. I don't know if Hi ever
did anything with the boy, but I'd bet a month's pay that he wanted to. There are
many asides in the book that suggest that Ralph was small for his age and very
cute.
These books are great reading for BL's and I challenge anyone to read the first 4 without
falling in love with little Ralph. By the fifth book he is becoming something of a know-it-all
teenager and in the last 3 he is a young adult. I found the ending frustrating because he
builds a nice little business and home for himself and throws it all away for a girl (eww) whom he
hasn't even seen in years. I highly recommend these books to all BL's!
