The Adventures of Stevie #5
These stories were told to me by friends and other people. Some of them
are true. Some of them are only partly true. Some of them should have
been true. LOL
My first post about Stevie ("Call me Stephen!") was when he was 12 and
in summer camp and was told by another camper. This was from a time
before computers would fit on a desk and when people communicated with
friends in other countries by actual letters sent through the postal
service. When children did this those friends were called "penpals".
Carlos is Stevie's penpal in Argentina and knows English. This is a
fictional contrivance to enable Stevie to tell us his stories because
he isn't here in person. I think.
The stories may not be posted in chronological order.
Stevie is 10 in this story, which takes place two weeks after story #4
The Adventures of Stevie #5 "Dogs and Paddles"
Dear Carlos,
I moved again to another Aunt and this time an Uncle. They live in a
two bedroom apartment in a big tower near other towers in XXXXXX which
is a city near XXXXXX. They are VERY old and don't have kids so I have
my own bedroom. I told them I was just starting to collect coins so
they gave me a lot of coins to play with. I never had so much spending
money before. Ha ha.
I saw a picture of a little girl on a table there. I asked who it was.
My Aunt cried. Uncle said it was their daughter who died when she was
little. I cried with them too. I think they were real happy to have a
kid stay with them again. I will try to be good.
Yesterday my Aunt and me made seltzer. I didn't know about it so you
might not know about it either so I'll tell you. It's plain water with
bubbles in it. It's like soda pop soft drinks like Coke but it doesn't
have any flavor or color. You put that in later. This is how people
used to make drinks before they came already made in bottles. To make
it you have to have a special metal bottle which you can make closed
real tight and a little metal tube thing of compressed gas called
carbon dioxide which is called CO2 too. You put water in the bottle and
and screw in the CO2 tube and make sure the bottle is closed real tight
and start it working. I know you have to have it really tight because
we didn't the first time. You know what happens when you shake a bottle
of Coke and then open it? That's what happened only much more. The
water got all over the kitchen and us. It was very funny and we laughed
and did it better the next time. I don't know why people make it except
for the funny accident. It tastes just like regular water but with
bubbles up your nose. You can put it in a special bottle after you make
it and spray people with it like in cartoons but we already did that by
accident. It's only funny the first time and then you have to clean it
up.
Their building has a big swimming pool outside. My Aunt and me went to
it but she didn't want to get in the water. I had to tell her I didn't
know how to swim. She said it was alright and I could get one of the
lifeguards to teach me. I got a floating board and held it out in front
and kicked the water real hard. I moved forward! Then I tried to move
my arms like I saw the other kids do and not use the board. I could
move a little and keep my head above the water but I got tired real
fast. Aunt said I was doing the dog paddle that little kids do who
couldn't swim right. I didn't know dogs could swim and I didn't know
they had to be paddled to do it. I didn't want to be paddled so I asked
a lifeguard to teach me how to swim the right way. He looked younger
than the other lifeguards so I didn't know if he knew everything but I
didn't want to wait for another one. I lay flat in the water on my
stomach and he held me there with his hands under me. He told me how to
kick and grab the water with my hands and arms. I thought I was doing
good but something happened which changed things.
His hand moved a little under me to a new place and touched me between
my legs. That tickled and surprised me so much I almost jumped out of
my swim suit which was too tight to let happen. It looked like he
didn't notice so I thought it was an accident and kept trying to swim.
Then he did it again. I liked it and wanted him to do it more but it
was very hard to concentrate on learning to swim. I didn't want to
disappoint my Aunt so I kept trying. Then he grabbed me there and that
was really great but I was so surprised I shot out of his arms so fast
I was halfway across the big pool before I knew what I did. I actually
swam and I didn't remember how I did it! Aunt was proud of me but I
didn't tell her why I did it or couldn't do it again.
I went back to the pool today but that lifeguard wasn't there. I wanted
more swimming lessons I wouldn't forget this time. Maybe something else
too. Ha Ha.
Your friend,
Stephen
