I haven't seen any reviews of this short story yet, so will add my quick
comments.
Over the last few years, I feel that Anne McCaffrey has been far more
successful in her short stories that in her novels, and "Beyond Between"
continues this trend.
Without giving away any spoilers, the story acts as a coda to "Moreta".
It certainly adds breadth to "Moreta" and "Nerilka", without detracting
from the overall sadness of that period of Pern's history.
My sole niggle is that the people in Moreta's time seem to know more about
Pern's history that should have been the case, after 1500 years - their
memory of the events seems to be more like someone in the 2nd pass, and
different from world as portrayed in "Moreta" and "Nerilka".
Apart from that, it's a good story, which raises (but doesn't answer) some
questions that I had always wondered about.
As for the meaning of title - you'll have to read it for yourself...
