Throughout all Pern? I doubt it. Besides, Thread certainly has the
ability to endure cold temperatures, otherwise the Red Star would be
rendered lifeless when it moves far from Pern's sun during intervals. The
"black dust" phenomenon is probably due to the extreme temperature change
between the frictional heat of atmospheric entry and the coldness of winter
air. But this wouldn't be the case at night for the warmer latitudes, nor
would it be the case for nights in colder latitudes during warm seasons.
