Dublin Dr Pepper Syrup! Cornell University
Doug Elrod (dre1@cornell.edu) 2004/05/13 10:41

I recently noticed that the Dublin, Texas Dr Pepper bottler is selling
their Dr Pepper syrup (made with pure cane sugar) now (see
<http://dublindrpepper.com/>).  It's $10 for an 8 oz. bottle.

I've tried this in various ways.  One can make THE WORLD'S MOST
EXPENSIVE DR PEPPER out of it, for instance, by combining one
part syrup with 5 parts carbonated water.  This is very good (and
one can even reduce the amount of syrup, say by 10%, and it still
holds up).  However, for less money, one could just get the
preassembled pure-cane sugar Dr Pepper straight from Dublin (see
above link), which is nearly as good these days as that available
from their soda fountain in Dublin, "Old Doc's Soda Shop".

I've also tried adding Dublin syrup to various Dr Peppers.  My local
Dr Pepper (upstate New York) appears to be largely HFCS (high fructose
corn syrup) based.  To counteract this HFCS flavor, which seems
to mask the full spectrum of Dr Pepper goodness, I had to add so
much syrup that I might have well have made it from scratch.

Adding syrup to Dublin Dr Pepper did not improve its excellence
(it was a bit like bringing coals to Newcastle, perhaps :-)).  Dublin
Dr Pepper is very good straight out of the 8 oz. bottle, particularly
when chilled.

Adding syrup to the 12 oz bottles of Dr Pepper out of West Jefferson,
NC (available through Sodaking, for instance <http://sodaking.com/>),
seemed to be useful.  To my mind, this variety is good warm, but a bit
weak to stand up to being chilled.  Adding 1/2 tsp. syrup per 12 oz
bottle makes it very good chilled.

Of course, your mileage may vary :-).
