Info.txt
Paul Asaro and Neville Dickie are being billed as “a generation apart,” but when it comes to stride piano they play as if they’ve always been joined at the hip.  First meeting in 1996, the idea of a duet recording soon jelled and finally became a reality when Asaro traveled to London for concerts with Dickie and a subsequent studio session.  This CD combines both studio and concert takes into an irresistible package.

The playlist is heavy on familiar tunes, but there is so much back-and-forth action and stellar improvisation that all will seem fresh.  Tempos range from slow and groovy to four-alarm fast, but in every instance the performances are clean and the timing is impeccable.  Each artist gets to kick loose on three solos apiece, spotlighting their individual talents yet emphasizing at the same time the similarities in their styles.  But when they play together, as Scott Yanow says in his extensive liner notes, the performances “…come across as one brain with four hands but two hearts.”

Therein lies the rub, albeit a small one.  It would have been enlightening and enjoyable to have sufficient separation between the pianos so it could have been said, for example, that Asaro’s instrument was in the left speaker and Dickie’s was in the right, but due to the way it was recorded there isn’t an easy method for the average listener to separate the players.  Don’t let that deter you, however.

Every cut is a winner, and for a bit of icing on the cake, Asaro contributes a vocal to I Wish I Were Twins and the duo add drums and bass for the finale, Tiger Rag.  Stride piano duet recordings are not very common, so when the considerable talents of Paul Asaro and Neville Dickie are paired and captured in perfect sound it becomes an event not to be missed.
