If you're looking for a real challenge, try to be in a bad
mood after listening to a Daft Punk album.
With Discovery, the dotty French duo has concocted another
blend of spaced-out house-hybrid tunes that no doubt belong
on the dance floor, but would also not be out of place in a
far-out robot disco, on the soundtrack to the next
outer-space fantasy flick, or as the theme song to
Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous -- 2001.
Matching Homework in quirkiness, buoyancy, and club-ready
freak-beats, Discovery combines the best of what Daft Punk
has to offer: mid-'80s synth-pop ("Digital Love"), sleazy
euro-funk ("Harder Better Faster Stronger"),
shake-your-booty electro-metal with spacey guitar effects
("Aerodynamic" -- Basement Jaxx meets Eddie Van Halen), and
minimal, big-beat tunes that Underworld wishes it would have
thought of first ("Superheroes").
"Crescendolls" is a zany, acid-washed house track with an
unstoppable party vibe (don't even try to ignore the
whooping and hollering), and hit single "One More Time" --
with nonchalant, vocoded vocals by Romanthony and more
infectious beats than you can count -- will no doubt be the
carefree dance anthem of 2001. As the chorus says,
"Celebrate and dance so free."
Granted, a few of the tracks on the second half of Discovery
lose a bit of steam along the way, and don't seem to have
that in-your-face Daft Punk sense of humor and eclectic
appeal -- but they're very few, and still decent tunes by
any standard. Never fear -- a few electro-jive beats into
"Short Circuit," and you'll remember why Daft Punk's madcap
music is in an orbit all by itself.
