With Restless by Secret Druid Society, First Fallen Star presents their sixth release. Secret Druid Society is a rather new project from Australia. They've released two CDr EP's in 2009 on Witte Dood Records (Premonition) and on Black Drone (Building The Hell). So with Restless they present us their first full album. The music of Secret Druid Society can be described as very deep and magical drone ambient.
Restless offers 7 tracks with over 50 minutes of extremely well-made drone ambient. The album starts with 'Deserted World', which is a beautifully melodic song and transports the listener to times long forgotten. Then we enter 'Restless (Foreboding)', a dark realm with indeed a foreboding atmosphere, where melodies have been swallowed by dark drones. 'Lonely Moon' feels like we are in an open field, contemplating deep feelings, with the moon above us as our only witness. It has a somewhat eerie undercurrent, but also has a very dark transcendental feeling. 'Phobia (Stones Are Moving)' is another striking deep and dark work of drones; we overcome our fear to be shown the true nature of everything unknown. 'Restless (Night Is Here)' makes us transcend our bodies to be entering a new realm of possibilities. 'Dawn Over The Deserted World' seems to cast a melodic shape over the world, a last goodbye from our former life. With 'Endless Ice Plains' we move endlessly over the face of ice, hidden deep in a deserted world, free from corruption of the mind. Entering a new form of reality.
With Restless, Secret Druid Society has created a very deep and spiritual drone album that is at times overwhelming. While it may offer nothing totally new in the field of drone/dark-ambient music, what is created here is done with maximum quality. There are dozens of ambient drone albums out there, and also a lot of them are not always as interesting or just plain wandering. Secret Druid Society knows extremely well how to make an excellent album in this genre. The listener is really exported to a place where time stands still, and where your inner psyche gets the power to overwhelm you with visions. This release comes in a nice digi-pack, which has a booklet with beautiful pictures and poems that go with each of the songs. A really excellent album for people into relaxing, albeit of the darker variety, drone ambient. Highly recommended!
