Baltimore natives, KIX, are one of my favorite classic hard rock bands!
I have been a fan since I first heard "Don't Close Your Eyes" on Dial-MTV back in 1989.
KIX are not as active as they were during the golden era of hard rock dominance.
The band rarely performs outside of the mid-Atlantic region of the U.S.A.
When it was announced that KIX would be performing at the Choctaw Casino "Grand Theater" in Durant, Oklahoma, I bought my tickets immediately!
I bought two tickets and gave one to my friend, Ellen.
We made the two hour trek north to Durant, Oklahoma around 5:00pm on the day of the show.
This would be only our second time to see KIX live.
The first being at the 2016 Hair Metal Holiday show, in Dallas, TX at the Bomb Factory.
KIX were the headliners of 80's Weekend Night II, with a unique version of Vixen in support.
The band performed for over 80 minutes and put 110% into their performance, in-spite of random technical issues.
The Grand Theater holds about 3,000 people.
The Tesla show I attended at this venue was jam packed.
Journey were also able to sell-out the Grand Theater on back-to-back nights in June of 2017.
Unfortunately, KIX and Vixen only managed to draw a few hundred fans.
This show could easily have been held at the much smaller Trees, or Gas Monkey Live, in Dallas.
I'd say the Grand Theater was barely at 25% capacity!
KIX brought no merch to the gig, which was surprising...
While the turnout was disappointing, KIX performed as if they were headlining an arena.
Steve Whiteman was the focal point of the show.
He sang and danced as if his pants were on fire...
Vixen were underwhelming.
I would have preferred, Warrant, Winger, or LA Guns, over Vixen.
Slaughter and Great White were the attraction on the first night of 80's Weekend.
Personally, you couldn't pay me to attend the Friday night show.
Slaughter are New Kids On The Block with long hair and guitars, if my opinion!
Great White is nothing without Jack Russell...
When I attended the 2017 Tesla show at the Choctaw Grand Theater, I discovered a prime taping spot. I made sure to buy tickets in that row for KIX!
Being that there were very few people around me, there was very little crowd noise during the KIX performance.
Originally, I had decided to set the REC level for this show at 8.0. In fact, I did capture Vixen at REC level 8.0.
However, there were several LOUD feedback bursts during the intermission between Vixen and KIX that would have sent my recorder over the egde if they occurred during KIX's set...
Wanting to play it safe while capturing KIX, I decided to set the REC level at 7.0 prior to the band taking the stage.
This was a wise move considering the strength of Steve Whiteman's voice, and booming bass tones.
My Vixen recording is hotter, but also features minor distortion.
I will share my Vixen recording as well.
Their lineup was unique as it featured Femme Fatale vocalist Lorraine Lewis filling in for an ailing Janet Gardener, for the first time.
