This is the first time I’ve checked this newsgroup and seen how much
candy there is here, and your posts about the digital watermarking.
I get the sets I do from the chans and torrents.
If cd are going digital watermarking that is a sign of their success,
as this is a very expensive option. It will prevent a huge amount of
free advertising though, the relationship between piracy and sales
spikes are a well documented phenomenon. Perhaps this is why they can
afford to watermark now.
I looked into a few of the companies providing this technology and the
market leader appears to be digimarc, but there are also smaller
companies offering a similar service like signmyimage by adptools.
Digimarc has a photoshop plugin which can tell you if a watermark is
present, and in the recent sets you have uploaded here, no digimarc is
present. This is not to say however that signmyimage has not been used.
In any case, let me get to the point.

If candy have gone down this path, this is going to change the
distribution patterns of their content without doubt. I agree with you
that to protect your source in japan you will need to stop all
distribution publicly because if anyone can see it, so can the crawlers
which search for the content.
Using an encrypted archive is next to useless, if we know the pass, so
do they. Taking the vowels out of the filename is pointless, the
crawler knows this behaviour and searches for a huge list of words.
When if finds the filenames, it will flag likely content and a human
will find the password and reveal your source. Most importantly, as
they say in their adverts, the crawler searches in known places, and it
is certain that any alt.binaries group will be. So will all the
imageboards.
Only through networks of trusted individuals who are aware of the
consequences will these files be distributed from now on. If you post
them anywhere publicly, or even somewhere with many users, the risk to
your source will be unacceptable. The truth is, if you are lucky to
know someone who sends you these, keep that and the files to yourself.
This could easily provide an industry in japan of middlemen who can
burn cards/identites providing access to the content. If it wasn’t so
hard to legally buy, it simply wouldn’t be pirated so much.
From now on is there any point not sharing what has already appeared
online? no, if it was found online, that person is going to lose their
access to candy anyway, the files might as well be shared.
Is this the end of the good times for candy? yes. but this will make
way for new content which can be distributed freely, and want to cash
in on that free advertising.
On the bright side, the 350+gigs (minimum) of candy in popular
circulation is a fine stand alone product. Nothing lasts forever, and
even if nothing else was added, it’s a nice collection.
From here on though, networks of trust need to be established, and that
is simply never going to be a newsgroup with a global audience.
I appreciate anyone uploading what I don’t have, but don’t assume you
are the only source pp. Even when you stop, and you should, there will
be many more sets uploaded as people lose their accounts.
If you haven't burned your source already, be glad of it and stop
posting now. I've never been to this group before today and I have
downloaded sets you've posted and seen the images. How is that possible
if you are being careful? Do you imagine somone working for the
watermarking company couldn't work out the passwords, or simply ask
what it is and be told?
The truth is, if you upload a set AT ALL you endanger a source. I had
no idea that candy were using watermarks, but you knew and still do it.
I'm glad you do, but don't kid yourself that what you're doing isn't
endangering your source.
