Giga is one of the few independents but DMCA have their hooks in deep
there.
There are a good number of tier one servers however most of these are
owned by a hand ful of companies that have been buying up smaller
servers over the past decade. Once their were twelve large companies
and now there are about 5 world wide - Highwinds being the biggest
followed by Omicron & Abavia.
Here is a link to a relatively recent listing for servers with some
description
https://www.reddit.com/r/usenet/wiki/providers

My criteria are connection speed, number of concurrent connections
allowed, group selection and retention of binaries. I don't buy blocks
anymore because I found I didn't use them.
