When they begin, it is advisable to visit the hard disk manufacturers
website to see if they provide diagnostic software for their drives
and if so download and run it. WD [rovides software as well as Seagate
and Hitachi (which is what I use).
Sometimes a "fried" HDD can be "resurrected temporarily" by putting it
in the freezer for a couple of hours and reconnecting it (disk platter
drives only)
If you have any technical explorative spirit you might be able to try
fixing it yourself

The drive may still be under warranty (various warranty periods) so to
mitigate the loss of data you can sometimes get another drive under
warranty. If it is WD you cannot return a drive on which you have made
any marks at all. I had a few WD's and to keep them sorted I magic
marked them and WD told me I had voided the warranty. That was 5 years
ago and I'll never buy another WD HDD. (BTW they would not offer me a
replacement disk because my marked up disk could not be re-used as a
warranty replacement, the pricks recycle disks under warranty so you
never get a new disk)
I now use raid 5 on data disks and raid 0 on the SSD OS.
I look forward to the day when platter drives are gone and all HDD are
SS. It should be soon.
