shadows because there's often some detail hiding in them. But you're
right, that black ought to be black & not some dark gray, no matter what
detail was to be seen. And I often find I've gradually pushed contrast
or sharpening a bit too far (I think), so I just as often back off to
less. I guess I'd rather make an image a tad softer than to overdo it.
And partly because I suspect the cameras & conditions they worked in
originally probably produced less sharp & contrasty images than we
routinely take these days (just my guess, though). Another thought I
have when I back off, is that its much easier for someone else to push
contrast & sharpening later if they wish but they can't undo well it if
I've gone too far.
