Found a synopsis of the Spider And The Rose, and it doesn't sound
promising as a place to find something as offbeat as the spider pool
components.
The Spider & the Rose (1923)
The story is set in southern California during the Mexican regime. Don
Marcello, son of the governor of the territory, returns home to find
that Mendozza, his father's secretary, has taken over and has aroused
the anger of the revolutionary faction. Don Marcello affiliates himself
with the revolutionists, who rid the community of Mendozza and reinstate
the governor.
