Readme-file for "Petits marins au Port"
Boys and girls,
These pictures are from the book called "Petits marins au Port" with photo's of Christophe Baltus. The publisher is J.M.V. Diffusion, ISBN 2-86660-045-2. I will post them in a three-week period.
These pictures remind me a bit of "Au bord du Douro" (jpp-bd) so at first I thought they were taken in Portugal. A closer look at one of the pictures revealed a traffic sign "Roma" so these boys are Italian! Although the quality of the print is sometimes pretty bad, which shows in the resulting scans, the beauty of the boys really makes up for that.
I have been in Italy once for only one day and still remember the beauty of the boys I passed on my way. So please enjoy with me the good looks and pretty smiles of these boys hanging out at the harbor and marvel at seeing that in the days these pictures were taken, it was only normal to skinny-dip if you didn't possess swimming trunks.

mp series:- I am enjoying the series, but are you sure the road sign
(in # 29) refers to Rome? In the scanned pic it looks to me like FEMA
and the road # A7 (and SARI A20? underneath)?
Other evidence: the boys certainly look hispanic as much as Italian.
Route # A7; I have Italian road maps dating from the 60's and roads
are just given a number, except for the largest, designated E + a
number. My (modern) Spanish map shows that Spain & Portugal do have A
+ number roads; there is an A7 up the east coast of Spain, meeting
A17, A18, A19 near Barcelona (can't find an A20).
The sign over the shop in 28 looks hispanic (Fast Film House?) not
Italian; the language on the van in # 28 looks Portuguese; the word
"Comunhoe" is not I think Spanish, and that and "batizados" are surely
not Italian.

About your new serie 'petit marins au port', you seem to have some
doubts where those pictures have been taken.
What I am sure is that a part of those pictures represent italian boys,
for the following reasons :
- Pic #29 show two traffic signs, ROMA and BARI (south east Italy) and
the symbol on the right represent the identification for 'Autostrada'
(Highway) and its number.
- Pic #5 and #28 shows the text 'Casa Filma Da Mae Prita', those are
italian words.
- Pic #17 just above the exchange office we can read '&Q SpA'; SpA is
the symbol used in Italy to design an incorporation (Inc.).
There is certainly a lot of other clues wich will confirm that Italy is
the country. But sorry I am unable to locate the town. It doesn't mean
that all the boys are italian ... they also may be tourists.

I know only the first 30 pictures from the jpp-mp series (Petits marins au
Port), and I can state without any doubt that some of them (#01, 05, 07, 12,
18, 20, 21, 28) are taken at the Ribeira quarters, Porto (Oporto), Portugal.
I can tell because there lays the well known D. Luis I bridge. The name
"Casa Filha da Mae Preta" is, obviously, Portuguese ("Mae" with tilde).
Some of the other pictures are clearly Italian, and the rest may be from any
of the two countries.
About your comment that "in the days these pictures were taken, it was only
normal to skinny-dip if you didn't possess swimming trunks."
I can tell that NOW (1990s) it is possible to see young boys swimming
naked-or-undies at Ribeira old harbour, at ponds in public parks
of Oporto and Lisbon, etc.
