Readme-file for "Au bord du Douro"
Boys and girls,
This is quite a small project, only 36 pictures in the set which I will post in two weeks. These are pictures taken by Jean Michel Klopp and Georges Krist. In the book were also some pictures of the town and the harbor but I didn't scan those, since they would have been against the FAQ :-).
This book reminded me of a holiday in France, when I was stuck in a small town without having any French money. It was Friday evening when I got there and the banks had already closed. I spoke to some boys (yes: mostly in French), and they assured me that the banks wouldn't open before Monday, darn it! The boys, when seeing my disappointed face, told me I didn't have to worry, they would take care of me until the banks would open, they would make sure that I wasn't going to starve.
Sure enough they did a great job: never before had I met such hospitality. I made friends with the whole village youth during that weekend. There was some sort of a carnival going on with rides and a dance-tent. So "Johnie" was invited to dance with the youngsters on Saturday evening. During the day we had all been swimming, not in a harbor but in the swimming pool in the next town, this village was too small to have one.
On Sunday the boys took me to one of their father's wine cellar, where we had an interesting competition: who was the one to drink his glass the fastest :-). Well, because I never had much practice it wasn't me who won, but I was the first one to go down, a pitiful victory for the Dutch visitor. Fortunately the wine wasn't that strong.
I still have fond memories of that weekend and of the boys that I met. Looking through this book made me think of that memorable weekend: it's very clear that the photographer was very well liked in this village as well, and that while taking these pictures he made many friends among the boys that live there. As you'll see when you go through these pictures, the photographer is known to the villagers, and probably he experienced as much hospitality as I did.
So now it's time to download these pictures and meet the people that live "Au bord du Douro" (Along the river Douro).
