As you have discovered, there is a LOT of crap being posted on usenet. You might want to try using Binsearch or a
similar indexing site to do searches. I have found that there are fairly distinct patterns that appear with bogus
posts. User names made up of random character, certain usernames beginning with YENC, most stuff in a.b.thelostmovies,
etc, titles whose file sizes are inconsistant with what they should be etc.
One way to avoid downloading a bucket full of junk bytes is to grab only the first two or three rar parts, then run
them through winrar. Check the "Keep broken files" box in the options box that comes up when you begin the combine
process. Combine the few parts you have, then see what appears in the file list. If you see a file name with an *
character behind it, it's passworded. If it shows an .exe extension, avoid it. If there is a bunch of urls and text
files in addition to a video file, that is another bad sign.
If it shows a valid file extension, decode what you have and see if you can play it. There are seveal players that
will play partial avi, mpg flv, and mkv files. MP4 files are a bit harder to play when incomplete, but you can usually
find one player or another that can do it. I use KMPlayer, & VLC mainly, but there are others, I'M sure.
This preview will tell you if you have a valid file, and also, the quality of the video. Lot's of really bad cam
captures out there, with even worse sound. Also lots of EXCELLENT rips. File size is not necessarilly the only
measure of file quality. Seen some excellent rips in 700mb packages as well as some real junk in 1.5 to 5 gb rips.
The partial download and test preview should save you a lot of wasted bandwidth and frustration.
