It's always been that way.
Usenet is premised on desktops and operates on an hours/day time cycle,
but it's a cellphone-smartphone world and a seconds/minutes cycle now. As
you say, this takes a little time, effort, and money, and the twitterverse
just can't be bothered with it.
The Death of Usenet has been imminent for a long time, but somehow
there continues to be a core of people who are more interested in things
other than "look at me".
If you want to see what a dead usenet looks like, just pick any group
where the discussion stopped and check the result.
