John Wayne's cavalry pictures have always caused me consternation as to what group to categorize them in. For a long time, I included the so-called "Cavalry Trilogy," starring John Wayne and directed by John Ford, in my "War/Military" group. The three movies included "Fort Apache" (1948), "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" (1949), and "Rio Grande" (1950). There were conflicts and battles, but they were against indigenous enemies in the American West, so I reclassified them into the "Westerns" group.
Here we have John Wayne in another cavalry picture. It stars John Wayne, is directed by John Ford, and features John Wayne as a U.S. Army Cavalry Officer in a blue U.S. Army officer's uniform. But for whatever reason, it is not considered in the same group as the "Cavalry Trilogy," What is the same is I'm not sure what category to consider it in.
IMDb gives four genres, one of which is "Western." Nothing takes place in the American West. There are no indians to fight. With all due respect to IMDb, this is not a Western.
Another genre IMDb offers is "Romance." Yes, there is a bit of Romance toward the end, but only some sort of simpleton would think this is a Romance movie.
The other two genres IMDb offers are "Adventure" and "War." I have moved this picture back-and-forth between the two, and currently have it in my "Action/Adventure" category. There were conflicts and battles, but as with the "Cavalry Trilogy" movies, they were against indigenous enemies. The Adventure is in riding much further south than would be anticipated, what the consequences would be, and trying to get out. But there is cannon fire and attacking soldiers, so at some point I may put it back in the "War/Military" category again.
