I don't want to seem obstinate but I really think this behavior has
something to do with crossposting, and very likely the setting(s) you
are using for Xnews. I'm not having the same problem as you, and I
hadn't heard anyone else complain.
Scotty posts primarily in abm.xvid, but occasionally crossposts (posts
a copy) to the one of two "vintage" groups.
To help users avoid downloading duplicate headers (and attachments)
for crossposted posts, usenet tools provide several options to control
the handling of crossposts. I use Agent and mine is set to download
the headers but mark them as "read" in every group except the original
(i.e. abm.xvid). I can still request a download of the full binary
message via either group. Your usenet browser (Xnews) may be set to
act differently - to NOT allow you to download anything exzcept from
the original group.
So I have to ask, were you able to grab the rars in abm.xvid?
