I am breaking two of my rules within two days. Yesterday I posted "Ike: Countdown to D-Day" (2004). I am trying to stay in the 1960s decade.
Today, "The Longest Day" (1962). I don't want to post something that's been posted in one of several groups in the last five years. This was posted in this group twice in that time period:

The reason for my transgressions is that D-Day is a day that changed the course of history. Its stature is immense! If there was no D-Day, or if it was unsuccessful, there would have been no second front. Hitler would have had dozens more divisions to send to the Eastern Front. That may have ensured the Soviet Union's defeat, and given Germany access to it vast mineral, oil, and food resources.
If there was no D-Day, or if it was unsuccessful, Hitler would have had the time to develop his "secret weapons." That included manufacturing more and better jet fighters, and included developing the atomic bomb. If there was no D-Day, or if it was unsuccessful, we all might be saying "Sieg Heil" (if we were even to have been born).
That's the reason for my breaking my rules. D-Day is a day that deserves to be remembered. Those who fought, including those who died, should be honoured.
